The world of wikis

I have been putting off learning about Wiki's because I've been worried about not getting it. At this stage, I've just started reading up on it and now I'm excited! I've seen some wikis and thought, this is OK, but when I read that I could use wikis to have all our library policies and procedures manual on it, I got excited. At present, our policies and procedures are in hard copy and as they change regularly, it is difficult (and time consuming) to update all 5 manuals. We are getting a new LMS, so maybe it's time for change. Anyway, I'm going back to read more and see if I can contribute to a wiki. Stay tuned ...

RSS - Really Spinetingling Stuff ...

I have seen this icon before, but always ignored it, thought it was just a funny picture or something.

I saw the YouTube clip about RSS, found it really useful. Basically, instead of me searching the Net for different things and either finding nothing or spending a lot of time finding something, the websites come to me. Sounds like having a pizza home delivered in a way. All I have to do is put my order in and wait for it to arrive. The main difference is it doesn't cost anything and there is no washing up!

I have so far just added feeds suggested, but will go back and have another play. I'm on a roll ... until next week!

Flickr attmpt

I told you I'm incapable of all this technology stuff. I have just spent the last half hour trying to upload a photo from Flickr and failed. Very frustrating. Luckily for me I have a brother who works in IT and he had to help me out. I can't rely on him all the time though.

Flickr in general seems great, just trying to upload a picture was a problem. I have attached the URL link of the photo I saw on Flickr, I don't know why it didn't work, but here it is:

I love the Mosman Library Flickr page, very inspiring. I wonder how long it takes to maintain? With everyone working so hard, who can find the time for this? I suppose once I get the hang of things, it won't be too time consuming, maybe I could do some work from home?

Feeling better.

I'm feeling a little more confident now with all this blogging stuff, just a little! I've been thinking about the potential for my Library and it could turn out to be a great promotional tool. We could show off the wonderful services and facilities we have and promote upcoming events. Currently, our book sale is happening, I can only imagine what the blog would be on that, we could have photos, updates, what's new for sale, how much we've raised, maybe even client feedback. Whilst I am very much an amatueur, I am excited about what blogging can do, just hope I can learn it all one day!

I've begun!

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, what I'm writing and who will be reading this. I feel I am young but am mentally too old to learn anything new. My parent's feel too old for the Internet and I feel I am too old for Learning 2.0. This is strange as I am only in my early 30s, but I don't know if I am capable of grasping the concepts of emerging technologies. Wikis', RSS, blogs, blah blah blah, when will it end? I can't keep up. It makes me feel dumb. I didn't go to Library School to learn about this computer stuff. I want to help people find information, shelve books, join people to the Library, yet I know I can't do any of this if I don't have a basic understanding of the technologies out there. I'm trapped!

How can people learn this stuff so quickly? I thought I was cool having a personal email address and getting on Facebook, that's not even the tip of the iceberg. Probably by the time I have learned something, a new emerging technology would have been developed and the learning cycle begins again. I would be surprised if I learn anything about 2.0, I just don't think I"m gonna get it. We'll see ...
